Drink Safe Water

On the average day most people don't even think about what is in the water that they drink. Most people wouldn't consider the idea that they might be drinking unsafe water. When disasters occur, however, and water supplies are contaminated many people are left with few alternatives when it comes to clean, safe drinking water.

The human body can survive for a week or more without food. It's pretty amazing how long we can get by on nothing to eat. However, within just a few days of water deprivation the organs will begin to fail and a person can become very ill. When you drink clean water it is absorbed by the body and not only helps to keep you cool, the fresh water also flushes out toxins that reside in your body from your food and enviorment. The water being replaced by new water is excreted from your system and contains many different minerals and toxins that are harmful to you. If you become dehydrated, your body retains water - which is bad because all of the toxins normally excreted remain behind. Eventually this can lead to organ failure and in some cases permanant injury and death.

When you are forced to drink contaminated water due to unforseen circumstances it is usually a time where there is no choice. This is why it is so important to keep a supply of water available for long enough to hydrate yourself and your family for 3-5 days. You can use bottled water, if need be, or you can store water that is filtered or distilled at home. In the leanest of times many people boil water to kill bacteria but it needs to be clarified - boiled water, while safer than contaminated water, is not clean water. Boiling water kills bacteria to be sure, however the dead bacteria remain in the water that you are drinking, as well as all of the inert compounds that contaminate water like heavy metals and debris.

Safe Drinking Water

One of the best ways to get safe drinking water is steam distillation. It advances the concept of boiling water to the next progressive level and reverts taht water to gas. The condensation that occurs when the steam is cooled creates fresh, pure H20. If you have the means to produce or acquire distilled water it is the best available option for your health. In extreme cases, filtering water before distillation is also possible. You can go about distilling water in several ways, or obtain it when you stock your bottled water. It can leech impurities from the bottles it is stored in but is infinitely cleaner than contaminated water and much healthier for you and your family. You can also purchase a water distiller, capable of producing as little as 5 gallons of distilled water at a time and as much as 15 or more. These distillers can be run on a generator and as long as there is pressure in your water supply will continue operating in emergency circumstances.

Whatever you do, in times of emergency it is vitally important to take advantage of the resources that you have available beforehand and to prepare for water emergencies. Safe drinking water is important to your health and your life. For more information on safe drinking water you can contact your local water board.
